The Music of Severance with Composer Theodore Shapiro
In this exclusive SoundWorks Collection conversation, discover how composer Theodore Shapiro created the haunting and minimalist score for the Apple TV+ series Severance. Known for his work on a wide range of films and shows, Shapiro takes a darker turn with this eerie, atmospheric soundtrack. We explore the stark piano motifs, analog synths, and dissonant strings and how the music perfectly captures the unsettling world of Lumon Industries.

Synopsis
"Severance" follows employees at Lumon Industries, who undergo a procedure called "severance" to separate their work and personal memories. This means "innies" (their work selves) are unaware of their "outies" (personal lives) and vice versa. The show explores the lives of these innies, particularly Mark Scout (Adam Scott), Irving (John Turturro), Helly (Britt Lower), and Dylan (Zach Cherry), who work in a sterile office doing "macrodata refinement". As they grapple with their unknown work duties, they uncover a larger mystery surrounding Lumon Industries and their own severed lives.
